A newly envisioned Police Accountability Board is being developed under the leadership and guidance of Vice Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer Mariam Lam.
For the first time at UCR, the UCR police will no longer investigate external complaints made by the community concerning their own personnel.
The PAB will be an independent accountability board consisting of students, staff and faculty. There will be an independent process in which complaints are investigated outside of the police department and then reviewed by the PAB to make recommendations to the Chief of Police.
Additionally, the PAB will proactively evaluate UCR PD policies, procedures, practices, and trainings to make recommendations when the PAB identifies possible improvements they discover in collaboration with the community.
UCR PD is excited for the implementation of the PAB by Vice Chancellor Lam later this year which should further enhance transparency and build trust with the Highlander community.
